Atlantic City FC, West Chester United qualify for U.S. Open Cup through NPSL

West Chester United is back in the tournament for a second straight year, Atlantic City FC for the first time

The field of 100 teams in the 2020 edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will include Atlantic City FC and West Chester United, which qualified through the National Premier Soccer League.

Atlantic City won the regular season Keystone Conference title by head-to-head tiebreaker after finishing the season with an identical W-D-L record to West Chester United at 7-1-2.

West Chester United fell short in local qualifying with a loss to USL of Pennsylvania rivals Vereinigung Erzgebirge and will have to field a completely different squad in the first round of the competition on March 24 or 25 (players who played in local qualifying are cup-tied to that team). VE qualified for the first since 2002.

West Chester United qualified through local qualifying last year and traveled to face Birmingham Legion FC in the second round last year after beating NPSL team FC Baltimore Christos on the road in the first round.

Atlantic City FC is in the U.S. Open Cup for the first time. The club was founded in 2017 and has played two seasons in the NPSL.

Reading United also qualified after winning the Mid-Atlantic Division and advancing to the USL League Two final for the second straight year but declined the invite because it relies primarily on active college players who will not be available when the tournament kicks off.

The Philadelphia Union will enter the competition in the fourth round on May 19 or 20.
